WHO REALLY ELECTS OUR PRESIDENT?
Hillary, Barack and Mc Cain are each expending monumental quantities of lung power (and cash) to stimulate voter momentum in their direction. It, however, is the Independent voter who will decide, in November, who our next President will be.
Our two major Political parties no longer have enough members to win an election. Independent voters in the US now comprise between thirty and forty percent of the electorate, considering variations from state to state. It may be that the percentage of Independents is even higher when taking into account Reagan Democrats and Obama Republicans.
Since the decision on who is elected President rests with the Independent voters, why isn't an Independent Presidential candidate making an appearance? Good question.
The answer lies within our Constitution. Since it is the Electoral College that elects the President, the office is not dependent upon voter plurality (as was shown in the 2000 election).
Without the requisite number of Electoral votes, the Presidential choice then goes to the House of Representatives. In that event, the decision would be expected to follow party lines. With the present Congressional make-up, an Independent Presidential candidate would have less than the proverbial snowball's chance.
Those of us who would like to elect an Independent President must first “seed the Congress” with Independents.
Of course, an alternative is to amend the Constitution to provide for a direct election of the President by plurality vote of the American electorate. Fat chance.
For now, in order to rescue our nation from the danger of collapse as “A house divided against itself”, it behooves us elect Independents to Congress.
